About LeafSteep
Good tea is mostly a handful of variables, and getting them right is what separates a flat, bitter cup from one that actually tastes like something. What water temperature suits this particular tea? How long should it steep, and does that change at altitude? How much leaf for how much water? Is a stronger, many-infusion gongfu session worth trying, and how should the timing shift as it goes? Roughly how much caffeine is even in this cup? Does the water coming out of the tap actually matter? None of these questions are hard individually, but few tea drinkers carry all the answers around in their head for every tea they own.
LeafSteep exists to answer them on the spot. Instead of one long article you have to read end to end, the site is built around a set of small, single-purpose calculators, each aimed at one part of brewing well. The Steep Time & Temperature Calculator gives a temperature and time range for white, green, yellow, oolong, black, pu-erh, or herbal tea, automatically capped for your elevation. The Tea Caffeine Calculator gives a transparent, adjustable estimate based on the tea type, cup size, leaf dose, and steep time. The Tea-to-Water Ratio Calculator solves for leaf weight or water volume, whichever you have on hand, for Western or gongfu-style brewing. The Tea Tasting Wheel & Flavor Note Findergives you a vocabulary for what you’re tasting, browsable by tea type or by note. The Gongfu Brew Timer builds a multi-infusion steep schedule and runs a live countdown through it. And the Water Hardness Calculator for Tea converts a hardness reading between units and explains what it means for flavor.
Beyond the calculators, the blog and learn section cover tea types, brewing methods, and the reasoning behind the numbers the tools produce, and the Tea Museum is a browsable collection of tea types, teaware, and the regions and history behind them, with every entry, image, and fact drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
A few things worth stating plainly. LeafSteep is an independent site, not affiliated with any tea estate, brand, or retailer. It is supported by advertising, which is how the tools stay free with no account required. Every figure the tools produce — a temperature range, a caffeine estimate, a ratio, a steep schedule, a hardness classification — is a general estimate built on common brewing conventions and published averages, not a laboratory measurement or medical guidance. If something looks off in a tool or an article, or there’s a calculator you wish existed, the contact page is the place to say so.
