Reading the classification

This tool uses the standard hardness scale published by the U.S. Geological Survey: soft water sits at or below 60 ppm, moderately hard runs 61–120 ppm, hard runs 121–180 ppm, and anything above that is classed very hard. The same total hardness can be expressed as German degrees (°dGH) or grains per US gallon (gpg), which is why utility reports and test kits don't always use the same unit.

Those minerals bind to compounds in tea and change how flavor and aroma come across — soft water lets a tea's own character lead, while hard water can flatten aroma, dull sweetness, and leave a thin film on the surface of the cup.

Where do I find my water's hardness?

Most municipal water suppliers publish an annual water quality report with a hardness figure, usually in ppm or mg/L as CaCO₃. If you're on a private well or want a direct reading, an inexpensive test strip or titration kit sold for aquariums, brewing, or water treatment will give you a value in one of the three units this calculator converts.

What water is best for delicate teas like green or white?

Softer water generally works best for green, white, and yellow tea, letting their more delicate aromatics come through. If your tap water tests hard, a basic carbon filter pitcher or bottled low-mineral water is a simple fix — completely mineral-free distilled water, on the other hand, can taste flat, since tea also needs some mineral content to taste full.
